Packing & Purging

I’m in an interesting stage of life right now. It’s a stage most people go through several times–especially in their early 20’s.

As I’ve mentioned several times in this blog, my fiancé moved to San Diego last June for work. Our December engagement provided me the assurance to leave Arizona and join her there, so that’s what I’m working on. I’m attempting to wrap things up here in Arizona, and begin again in San Diego.

This weekend I got rid of most of my furniture. Just over four years ago, I built this home and furnished the entire place from scratch. On Sunday, I saw proud college students drive it away, excited to own something not built with an allen key. So my downstairs is now basically empty, and I’m slowly chipping away at the upstairs in my home. I’ve emptied bookshelves and packed several boxes.

Amidst all of the packing, there is a lot of purging too.

I already have 3 more bags of clothes ready for Goodwill. I’ve thrown away several mini-keepsakes that all once held some sort of value, but at this stage in life, no longer meet the bill of holding on to it a bit more.

The packing and purging does get boring at times (especially since I also got rid of my television set and spend most of the packing time just with my iTunes playlist keeping me company), but ultimately the experience is liberating.

I’m prioritize the “stuff” in my life. I realize I’ve held on to a lot that I really don’t “need.” I’ll likely be moving from my three bedroom house in Phoenix to a two bedroom apartment in San Diego.

I’m definitely downsizing, but I think I’ll also be upgrading as well. My priorities in life have dictated this move, and once I’m over the stress of moving, I think I’ll be in for a treat with life.

So I guess my questions here really become: What are the things in your life that you want to pack? What are those things that you want to purge? What can you do today to help make that happen?

I’ll keep you posted on the move. Hopefully, I’ll be in San Diego full-time mid-to-late May of this year. My fiancé and I are checking out apartments this weekend.
