In 1998 a group of underclassmen at Leigh High School created an award to recognize a graduating senior for his/her outstanding service to home, school, and community in Key Club. The students named the award after Patrick Maurer, the first Key Club Governor from Leigh
High School and a graduating senior at the time of the awards creation. In 1999 Patrick added a scholarship component to the award. It is now presented annually at the Senior Awards Night. Recipients, still chosen by their underclassmen peers on the basis of service
rather than title or position, have their names added to a perpetual plaque displayed at Leigh High School.
