Honorees
While this race may seem extreme to you, it is nothing compared to challenge that people with cancer face every day. I am privileged to train and to complete this marathon in honor of some very special people:
Andrea Hoeke was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in July of 1988. After several months in the hospital including a period of time in which she had no human contact, she had an autologous transplant. Deemed a success, she returned just in time for Christmas. In June of 2003, she completed her first Marathon with Team in Training.
Rol Chapman does not remember most of February 2002. In the course of one week, he endured three major brain surgeries as doctors tried to remove a strange bacteria. Doctors realized something wasn't right and later discovered that Rol's inability to fight off the bacteria was due in part by a low-grade indolent lymphoma. After several difficult
chemo treatments, several mini-seizures, and additional diagnoses and treatments, Rol appears to be on the road to recovery.
Terry Parks was diagnosed in November of 1976 with Hodgkin's Disease stage II/III. After enduring many months of chemotherapy, Terry has been cancer free since February of 1978. Due to his doctor's correct diagnoses and treatment, he has been able to watch his teenage children, Daniel, Monica, and Jennifer grow.
Kristi Peterson worked as an apheresis nurse at Stanford Medical School Blood Center for over fifteen years prior to testing positive for myeloma and amyloidosis, another rare blood disease, in 2000. After several painful months of chemo and numerous difficult medical visits, she underwent an auto stem cell transplant at Cedars Sinai Medical Center
in Los Angeles. Kristi spent several months in the hospital. She still has new hurdles to overcome, but she is enjoying the time she can share with her two adult children, Kari and Kristofer.
Honor Them
If you would like to pay tribute to someone in your life who has been
afflicted with leukemia, lymphoma or any other form of cancer, please list
his/her name below. I'd be honored to add their name(s) to the honoree
bracelets I will wear during the race.
