Welcome to my bookshelf. In recent years I've rediscovered the same love for reading I possessed as a child. Literature offers us enormous opportunities to expand our horizons, develop as individuals, empathize with others,
and strengthen our communities. Unfortunately, in our busy daily lives, we often forget to take the time out to sit back and enjoy a great book. In this section I've provided a few reading selections that I have really enjoyed
or that have really assisted me in my personal development. Pick up a copy of one of these books and drop me an email to let me know what you think of it.
Current Reading
- Accordion Crimes by E. Annie Proulx
Recent Reading
- Open to Outcome: A Practical Guide for Facilitating & Teaching Experiential Reflection by Micah Jacobson & Mari Ruddy
- Micah and Mari take the 5 question model from the successful Link Crew & WEB program and further expand upon it. Their method is simple, direct, and incredibly useful for facilitators of all levels of experience.
- Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, Ph.D.
- Pipher takes her years as a pyschologist and her many discussions with adolescent girls and provides a sobering look into the difficulty teenage girls face. The book provides a natural flow, although the true accounts can be difficult to read at times. This is a must read for anyone who works with this age group.
- The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
- Hemingway follows the lives of several artisans living in Europe as they struggle with life and love over the course of several weeks. As much as I tried to get into this novel, it never really hooked me. The dialogue does have that Hemingway magic, but I found the characters to be too self-centered for me to really become immersed in the story.
- A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by David Eggers
- If nothing else, read the introduction to this unique memoir by the talented Eggers. I've never been so thoroughly fascinated, confused, and entertained by a book. Eggers describes several significant years in his life in an unapologetic and surprisingly creative manner. There is no convention he isn't afraid to turn on its head. His novel isn't for the light reader, but those dedicated to its completion will definitely see brilliance Eggers possesses.
- State of Fear by Michael Crichton
- Once again, Crichton blends scientific research with seat-of-your-pants storytelling to create a page-turner novel focusing on global warming and eco-terrorists. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and some of the concerns it raises. A definite read for fans of Crichton's earlier work
