Patrick's recommended books for Winter by category:

Leadership

  • The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
Blue's Clues, teenage smoking, Paul Revere, crime in New York city, and Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood are all open to examination in Gladwell's fascinating exploration of epidemics and word of mouth campaigns. Gladwell presents this complex and complicated topic in a compelling and easy to digest manner. His tone is almost conversational as he thoroughly illustrates each one of his points. Although Gladwell doesn't provide a complete prescription as to how to get your own promotion to reach the tipping point, he does identify each one of the elements as well as several missteps by others. I just couldn't put this book down.

Fiction

  • The Pleasure of My Company by Steve Martin
I've enjoyed most of Steve Martin's movies, but prior to receiving this book, I had hardly read any of his writing. Now I can't imagine not picking up the next Steve Martin novel. This particular novel focuses on Daniel Pecan Cambridge, a savant struggling to survive in his daily life. Sidewalks, wattages, and real estate agents all present particular problems for this narrator, but there is just something waiting to break out. Martin's tone is refreshing--brilliantly balancing humor & compassion.

Children's

  • The Chronciles of Narnia(series) by CS Lewis
I remember sitting in my house in Placentia at age five listening to my mom read these books to my siblings and me. Now with a brand new version of the film in release, I believe it is the perfect time to pick up a set of these beloved books. I've just started rereading them. Lewis, like his good friend Tolkien, has created a beautiful world and a brilliant battle between good and evil. If you can, read these books before seeing the film.

Potpourri

  • It's Not Easy Being Green: And Other Things to Consider Jim Henson et. al
I received a copy of this book for my birthday and it remains a wonderful gift. I've always believed there was something magical about Jim Henson, and now everyone can experience his magic on their leisure. Whether it be from the way he lived his life or the thoughts he shared with friends, or the unending stream of insight provided by his beloved Muppets, Henson continues to teach in that unique way only he can. A definite must read for any fan of the Muppets or simply anyone who needs a smile.
